BIOGRAPHY
JUAN CARLOS LÉRIDA (Úbeda). Bringing together different artists on the same stage and delving into research on the body and improvisation are the foundations and hallmarks that have led him to develop his most outstanding works such as: “The Art of War” (2007); “The Learning” (2012); the trilogy on The Bodies of Flamenco: “To the Touch” (2011), “To the Song” (2014) and “To the Dance” (2016), “The Liturgy of the Hours” (2021) or CHER, premiered in 2025 and which received the Barcelona critics' award for best solo.
He dedicates his time to stage direction and choreography, while also continuing his work as a teacher and researcher, coordinating artistic research laboratories at the Institut del Teatre and other centers in Europe and the United States, as well as his curatorial work for Mercat de les Flors (Empirical Flamenco Cycle) and the Tanzhaus NRW flamenco festival, Dusseldorf.
In 2023, he published the book "The Empirical Flamenco Method" where he proposes new creative and pedagogical methodologies in the field of dance.
CARMELA MUÑOZ (Barcelona). Dancer, choreographer, teacher, and researcher, she graduated from the CSD at the Institut del Teatre BCN. She has developed her professional career as a performer with companies such as Estévez-Paños, Chloé Brûlè-Marco Vargas, José Manuel Álvarez, La Fura dels Baus, Juan Carlos Lérida, and Patricia Caballero, while simultaneously cultivating her career as a creator with pieces such as Catalina Mía, Bailes de Histéricas, and Invocation. She won First Prize for Choreography and the Outstanding Dancer Award for Catalina Mía at various choreographic competitions in Madrid in 2017-2018. In 2021, she received the award for best performer for Study on Hysteria at the 15m2 Festival, in 2022 the award for best performer at the PAD Andalucía Awards for her participation in the piece Origin, and in 2023 the award for best piece in unconventional space at the PAD Andalucía Awards for Invocation.
Currently, she is developing her long-term research project, "Invocaciones boleras o la danza de las desposeídas" (Bolero Invocations or the Dance of the Dispossessed), collaborating with different contexts of research, memory, writing, and transmission of dance.
SYNOPSIS:
Understanding the artwork as a vessel for experiences and practices that permeate bodies, Carmela Muñoz and Juan Carlos Lérida view heritage works through their own. As a revealing distortion, as a sensation of suspended time. A kind of mirage that allows the inevitable to manifest itself.
A project of memory, research and creation where the work is life itself.
Carmela and Juan Carlos say:
This project gives us the opportunity to connect with each other in a way that hasn't happened before. Up until now, our relationship has been limited to the idea of generational transmission.
But it is now that the opportunity arises to place our work horizontally, which is composed of artistic trajectory, contexts where they have developed and a practice on rhythm and mysticism.
All of this in a back-and-forth dance with the heritage work as if it were a mirage.
We sense that the methodology we have proposed to investigate and investigate ourselves is a fruitful decision, because it places the concept of work as a life experience that goes through our bodies and that we triangulate on this occasion with heritage.
We share Andalusian origins, as well as an artistic development in Barcelona, and we have been forged in orthodox techniques which have invited us to be irreverent with them as an act of rebellion and love. And no less important is that relationship with flamenco: a tension of gesture stemming from the rhythm and mysticism that inhabits bodies and spaces.
Everything is a trigger for seeing ourselves in our own works. A way to bend time and accept the inevitable. It's now.
