HERITAGE SCENE

Praza da Quintana

IX HERITAGE STAGE FESTIVAL.
ROGER BERNAT. Spring consecration

The Rite of Spring – Roger Bernat. The Praza da Quintana hosts Roger Bernat's 2010 version of one of the great works in the history of dance. Created by Pina Bausch in 1975 to Igor Stravinsky's celebrated score, premiered in 1913, The Rite of Spring has become a true monument of the contemporary repertoire. Roger Bernat offers a radical reinterpretation of the classic as part of A Noite do Patrimonio (Heritage Night), which invites us to question what it means, precisely, to preserve the masterpieces entrusted to us. Instead of faithfully reproducing the original or adding a "personal" vision to the long history of Rites of Spring, Bernat proposes the opposite operation: he strips the work of what seemed to sustain it, leaving it to survive inhabited solely by ghosts. The stone floor of the Praza da Quintana symbolizes nature in its purest form and death. The dancers appear to be at the mercy of superior forces, immersed in an archaic, almost animalistic struggle. Their trembling bodies are gripped by extreme, visceral tension. The choreography explores themes such as collectivity and sacrifice, and questions individual responsibility within collective systems. The audience transitions from spectator to participant in a mechanism they may not fully understand, but which confronts them with the role each person plays within the group.

Read in the context of Heritage Nights, the piece speaks not only of dance but of the very nature of heritage: a legacy only exists as long as there is a community willing to assume the responsibility—and the risk—of making it its own. Because perhaps the greatest threat to a masterpiece is not transforming it, but preserving it until it becomes a cultural meme.

ROGER BERNAT. Talk.UTI ET ABUTI (use and abuse)

Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring , Shakespeare's Hamlet , the Stone of Oaths in the Athenian Agora, the Palace of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, or even Fagor are part of our heritage, which means that they are assets that we have inherited and, therefore, belong to us.

On the occasion of Heritage Day and, based on my own projects that have transformed and who knows if perverted the monuments listed above, I propose to start a debate on the fetishism of meanings.
