BIOGRAPHY

María del Mar Suárez "La Chachi". Málaga 1980

An actress and flamenco dancer, she earned degrees in both disciplines in her hometown of Málaga. After specializing in flamenco with La Lupi, and training in physical theatre, new dramaturgy, and contemporary dance, she discovered her true passion…the union of all of the above.

In 2008 he began to distort flamenco and gesture in different pieces, taking shape as his own language in Ph8 by Miguel Palacios for the OFF Avignon Festival 2011. From this moment on, a voracious hunger to immerse himself in this hybridization appeared.

The Unscalable Alps, Searching for Currito, the creator's third piece, premieres at the 39th Madrid Autumn Festival. Winner of the 2022 Godot National Award for Best Dance Performance, it was also included in El Confidencial's 2023 list of the ten best national performances, named 2024 by the DDD Portugal Festival, and selected for the Antropositivo 2025 Brazil-Portugal-Spain award. A national and international tour with Danza a Escena has taken it to prestigious festivals and centers such as TNT Noves Tendencies-Terrassa, DDD Porto Festival, Teatro Central in Seville, Caen Choreographic Center (Normandy), Kunsten Festival at the Arts Brussels, Sant Arcangelo (Italy), Alkantara Festival 2025 (Portugal), and the Flamenco Festival Nîmes (France), among others.

Taranto Aleatorio, a piece premiered in Madrid in 2022, delves for the first time into the formal investigation of a traditional flamenco style. It received a Special Jury Mention at the 40th Andalusian Performing Arts Fair. Selected for the Spring Forward Festival Aerowaves Europe (Germany) 2024 and the Cinars-Montreal Biennale 2024, it has toured more than 30 countries. Lâs Alergrías (Aleatorias), the second installment exploring the groundwork laid by Taranto, premiered in January 2025 at Conde Duque in Madrid. It will be part of programs at venues such as Teatro Central in Seville, Mercat de les Flors (Barcelona), the Dansa Valencia Festival, and Ma ESCÈNE NATIONAL in Montbélliard (France). The project was selected by Graner Centre for Contemporary Creation in Barcelona in 2024 and named one of the five best dance performances of 2025 by the newspaper El País.

SYNOPSIS:

Climbing as a symbol of overcoming, the pilgrimage route as a symbol of salvation. Both paths we propose redeem the body; both make us grapple with the unattainable. This piece is a literal journey, traveling from one point to another like an adventure, a tragedy. Along the way, the body is transfigured into penance, because a body that prays is transformed, prostrates itself on the ground, and writhes. In this quest, krump appears, an ecstatic embodiment, flamenco. As the hymn says, "it all began one morning," and as in any journey, one doesn't know where one will arrive. My Shepherdess, Queen, mistress of my soul: save me. Rocío, save me.

Groundbreaking, intense, hypnotic, masterful, visceral are just some of the adjectives the show has garnered wherever it has been presented. It's clear that La Chachi has rightfully earned her place in the recent trend of flamenco's rupture and revaluation, following in the footsteps of other outsiders like El Niño de Elche, Israel Galván, and Rocío Molina. This impossible climb (judging by the piece's title) is a challenge that transforms from a mystical object into a carnal struggle, seeking redemption in the other, from sacred to profane love without losing its depth. "I like to take flamenco to impossible situations, to impossible bodies," La Chachi acknowledges with her unique expressiveness, an indomitable gestural style that she possesses both on and off the stage.

Post-performance meeting with the artistic team at the Temple of Diana, around 22:00 pm.
