The 5th edition of the Dance Festival ESCENA PATRIMONIO will take place on 17th September 2022 in the 15 Spanish World Heritage Cities. This year under the motto «legacy», and Italy as guest country.
To date, the Festival and platform for choreographic creation ESCENA PATRIMONIO has welcomed more than 60 choreographers, choreographers and companies from all over Spain as well as international artists, offering them the extraordinary opportunity to inhabit and dialogue with these great vestiges of the past and our present .
In this way, ESCENA PATRIMONIO has become a benchmark for the decentralization of the cultural offer in Spain, beyond the limits and networks of the large metropolises, serving as a model in the exploration of new formats for engaging new dance audiences, and thus configuring a space of exchange between World Heritage Cities, artistic territories and diverse communities.
Within the framework of THE HERITAGE NIGHT 2022 and the celebrations of the 50 years of the World Heritage Declaration, on Saturday, September 17th 2022, Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Baeza, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza / Eivissa, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de la Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona, Toledo and Úbeda will exhibit simultaneously the 15 pieces by the guest choreographers, with 7 world premieres in 20 performances that will be accompanied by parallel activities linked to dance such as workshops, meetings and video-dance projections.
The selection of the companies and spaces that make up this festival has been made by the Commission for Education, Culture and Sport of the Spanish World Heritage Cities Group, under the artistic direction of Lorenzo Pappagallo.
With the aim of continuing to reactivate the decentralized cultural offer and support the creative fabric of our communities, we have wanted to draw a very diverse program that navigates between dance contemporary and the signs of our intangible heritage, such as flamenco, danza española and folklore in its most contemporary and innovative aspects, and that also dares to hybridize with other disciplines such as urban dance, video creation and choreographic sound installation.
This year, once again, and with the aim of reaching out to all the age groups and communities of these 15 Cities across Spain, the tickets for the shows will continue to be free of charge.
In the constant search for alliances, this year 2022 we will also have a co-production with the 20th CÁDIZ EN DANZA International Festival and collaborations with the HAY Festival of Segovia and Flamenco Biënnale Nederland, all of them festivals with a recognized national and international trajectory and references in cultural programming.
In addition to this, we will have Italy as a guest country thanks to the support of the Institute Italiano de Cultura in Madrid and the Embassy of Italy in Spain, as well as with the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands through the programme CANARIAS CREA for various creative residencies.
Music is an important feature of all the pieces curated within ESCENA PATRIMONIO programme and we encourage each year that the creations presented will be accompanied by live music and original soundscape. In this edition, the Instituto Camões in Madrid and the Embassy of Portugal in Spain as well as the Diputación de Jaen will support the original composition and world premiere of two music creations commissioned by the Festival.
While in the last edition we focused on the concept of roots, this year’s program has been forged under the various interpretations of the term legacy, coinciding with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Declaration.
We understand the legacy as what is left or transmitted, whether material or immaterial. In this way, we seek to reflect through artistic expression on the connections between the past, the present and the future. About how we relate to what has been given to us through inheritance (such as heritage), about how we take care of it and preserve it, and about what we will leave as a legacy to future generations.
After five editions reaffirming our mission to consolidate the festival as a platform for the presentation and creation of shows in heritage spaces, we want to offer the extraordinary opportunity to renowned and emerging choreographers from 6 Spanish regions (Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia,Madrid, Galicia and Navarra) to premiere some pieces created expressly after periods of artistic residencies. These pieces will allow these artists to delve into the local features that define and characterize each of the Cities, dialoguing with their own creative processes, and giving the whole an international artistic projection.
